Moving our webshop to Growing Good
Kristof writes about why an e-commerce platform built for and by market gardeners could be transformative for our customers’ user experience as well as our commercial objectives
Many of you have been with us from the very early days of our online sales. Some of you will have remembered the WIX-based webshop which was quick for our team to set up, but didn’t really support the administration of our product offering and stock very well - for example listing a box of vegetables as a collection of other vegetables (products made of up other products) wasn’t an option.
The team then moved to UNAS, a Hungarian e-commerce platform which was a lot more powerful, specifically built for businesses selling their products online. Here, the issue was that all the useful features were focused on us, the team administering the webshop and not YOU, our customers using it. It took a few years of iteration to really make it user friendly and slick. It’s still not perfect, so we’ve been looking around for the next solution.
Steve Sidhu and George Bennett - founders of Growing Good
We’ve been talking to a team of developers and market gardeners in the UK, called Growing Good for the past 2 years. They have a large number of organic veg box schemes on their platform - amongst them Sandy Lane Farm who we visited earlier this year and Growing Communities - a veg box scheme I was a customer of in East London for a number of years. It has taken them some time to open to customers outside the UK and support different languages, currencies and VAT rates (hopefully we will be asking them to update this for Hungary, this very soon…).
There are some amazing features which we’ve struggled to implement despite your (our customers’) repeated requests. For example the ability to store a payment method and have a favourite order repeat weekly by default - this is NOT to lock you in, it’s to allow you to get fresh vegetables every week without forgetting. You are completely free to pause orders at any time or simply use our shop for a single order as you do today. Other features will see you boxes become more tailored to your needs with the ability to SWAP out products that you and your family don’t love for ones that really make that school night supper an event!

We have been working with the Growing Good onboarding team this Spring and ramping up activities this summer. Our target go-live date is mid-August. In preparation we will be launching our onboarding app in just a few weeks. This will allow you to create an account on the new platform ahead of the go-live date for a really seamless transition.
